VISIA alternative: do you need a skin analysis machine to sell treatment plans?

It depends on the job. If you need deep, standardized imaging (UV, cross-polarized light, red and brown separation), a VISIA or a similar machine is the right tool, and a phone is not a replacement. If your real problem is that patients like the consultation but do not book, the machine is not what is missing: a written, priced plan is. TheLab, by Beauty GrowthLab, reads the skin from three phone photos and turns it into three priced plans built from your own menu, with no machine to buy.

What a VISIA actually does

According to Canfield’s own page, the VISIA photographs the face under standard, cross-polarized and UV light, measures spots, wrinkles, texture, pores, UV spots, brown spots, red areas and porphyrins, separates red and brown components with its RBX technology, compares visits side by side, and prints a report with product and treatment recommendations. The current version adds 3D tools.

That is real depth. Under UV and polarized light it shows things the eye and a phone camera cannot.

What it costs

Canfield does not publish a price. Third-party guides put a VISIA-class system at a five-figure purchase in US dollars, most often quoted around twelve to fifteen thousand, with yearly software and support on top. Treat these as estimates and ask for the year-two cost in writing.

Where the machine stops

The scan impresses. The patient sees her UV spots, she is convinced she needs something, and then the consultation ends with advice: “a few peels, then we will see”. The image created the need, but nothing written says what to do next, in what order, over how many visits, or at what price. She goes home with a report, not a plan, and the report does not book itself.

This is the gap no machine closes on its own, whatever it costs. It is the same reason covered in how med spas get higher-value treatment plans accepted.

They combine. Many clinics keep an imaging machine for diagnosis and add a plan-first app for the decision at the end of the consult.

What TheLab does, and what it does not

Five questions before you buy any machine

  1. What will happen in the five minutes after the scan? If the answer is “we print the report”, plan how that report becomes a booked plan.
  2. What is the total cost in year two, software and support included?
  3. Has it been shown on darker skin types, in front of you, on your own patients?
  4. Where are the photos stored, and in which country?
  5. Who runs the scan, and how long does it take on a busy day?

Frequently asked questions

Is TheLab a VISIA alternative?

For the decision at the end of the consultation, yes: it turns the skin reading into three priced plans. For deep imaging, no: it sees the surface only and does not do UV or red and brown separation.

How much does a VISIA cost?

Canfield does not publish prices. Third-party guides estimate a five-figure purchase in US dollars, plus yearly software and support. Ask for a written quote including year two.

Do I need a skin analysis machine to sell treatment plans?

Not necessarily. Patients rarely say no because the scan was not deep enough. They say no, or ‘I’ll think about it’, when they leave without a written, priced plan and a booked next visit.

Can I keep my VISIA and use TheLab?

Yes. The machine keeps the diagnosis, TheLab builds the plan the patient chooses. They do different jobs.
